"Danger? Can a stick from a curare-tipped dart really kill you?"

Rose Kubiatowicz designed and developed Oh No! Ethnobotany, a program concerning health and safety issues inherent in the handling and storage of potentially hazardous ethnobotanical materials.  The program looks beyond the wide range of residual toxic chemicals present from the treatment of the item to specifically address concerns raised by toxic chemicals inherent in the ethnobotanical material itself.    In 2006 twenty-one samples from suspected hazardous ethnobotanical objects, ranging in age from twenty-five to one hundred-fourteen years old, underwent organic residue analysis using gas & liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Samples taken from SMM collections objects included curare-tipped darts, poison-tipped arrows, barbasco vine, ayahuasca branches, yoco vine, opium pipe, kava roots, tobacco cigar, tobacco plug, clavo huasca vine, quinine branch, Precatory pea seed, Ceylon drug bundles and a Tibetan altar bottle.  In this talk, Rose will describe various components of Oh No! Ethnobotany, including the use of evocative pictographs, labeling, storage methods and  Ethnobotany Material Safety Data Sheets (EMSDS).   She will present the results of chemical testing and reveal whether pharmacologically active natural products including toxins can survive in ethnobotanical objects stored long-term and whether they remain stable in quantities great enough to represent a potential hazard to museum personnel.

Special Note about Pricing and Museum Admission:

This meeting is a bit more expensive than the usual MNACS meeting. The cost is being subsidized a bit by our local section, otherwise it would be well over $30 per diner. Because of this we cannot offer our usual lower student price. MNACS has had to commit to pay for 50 guests. We will not break even with under 50 people! Bring family and friends - the talk will be very accessible and the food excellent.

The cost includes a will-call admission ticket; however we cannot lower your cost if you are already a museum member or volunteer and thus don't need a ticket. You are also getting an interesting opportunity to see behind the scenes in the artifact conservation/display prep area at the museum.
The PayPal button includes a $2 "handling" charge - this is applied once; if you want to bring a friend/spouse/whatever, the additional person cost is only $22.

Payment "at the door" is still only $2 more, total $26, (we do this to encourage prepayment!) but you will not get the will-call museum admission ticket if we don't know you're coming. Please use the form below to reserve for a pay-at-the-door rate.
