Topic: Essential Habits of Effective Inventors
Location: Normandale College
Abstract: Inventions have been the
fuel for growth in industrial civilizations. To be effective inventions are
created by inventors who through their imagination and diligence take it to the
next step of implementation. This presentation will examine some of the common
behavior patterns that successful inventors have followed to overcome
challenges and turn their inventions into useful innovations.
| Biography: Dr.
Sumita B. Mitra received a Ph.D. in Organic/Polymer Chemistry from the
University of Michigan, USA. She joined the Corporate Research Laboratory of 3M
Company in 1978 and later moved to 3M Dental Products Division (now 3M ESPE
Dental) in 1983. She held the position of Corporate Scientist and was in charge
of new materials/products research and development since 1998 until her
retirement from 3M ESPE Dental Products Laboratory. During this time she also
served as the Industrial Director of the Minnesota Dental Research Center of
Biomaterials and Biomechanics at the School of Dentistry, University of
Minnesota. Currently she is a Partner at Mitra Chemical Consulting LLC.
Dr. Mitra is the creator of many new materials technologies
and the developer of several new product segments for the dental and
orthodontic market including resin-modified glass ionomers (inventor of this
category), adhesives and composites. Her
R&D efforts have been translated into the development and commercialization
of many new innovative products for use for the dental practitioners. Sales of
products from R&D efforts exceed $2.1 Billion cumulatively. More recently
she pioneered the application of nanotechnology in dental materials and created
the first true nanofilled composite, Filtek™ Supreme. This technoclogy has now
been expanded and incorporated into many new products in the dental industry,
most recently into Ketac™ Nano resin-modified glass ionomer.
She has been the recipient of 70 US patents and their
corresponding OUS equivalents, and has numerous publications (90+) in the areas
of polymer science and dental materials including 6 chapters in 5 books. She is
an internationally recognized lecturer on these topics and has given more than
100 presentations and courses in 45 countries.
She has received numerous honors and awards,
both inside and outside 3M. She was inducted into 3M’s prestigious Carlton
Society in 1998. She received the 2004 American Chemical Society Regional
Industrial Innovation Award as well as the American Chemical Society 2009 “Heroes
of Chemistry Award” for her contributions in the field of Dental Materials.
Most recently she was recognized by the “Top 25 Women in Dentistry”, 2010 Award
by Dental Products Report.
