The Chemistry of Leadership
Presenter: Brian Strohmeier

Dr. Strohmeier has more than thirty years of research experience in the practical application of surface and microscopic analytical techniques for industrial product/process development, industrial problem-solving, and materials characterization. His technical expertise includes: X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS, also known as Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis or ESCA), Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and other related analytical and spectroscopic techniques. His technical experience includes the study of adhesion, corrosion, oxidation, and wetting phenomena; chemical and plasma modification of material surfaces; and the surface characterization of metals, oxides, minerals, glass and fiberglass, ceramics, polymers, vacuum-deposited thin films, organic coatings, and heterogeneous catalysts. He also has served as an expert trial witness for litigation involving surface analytical techniques.

In addition to his technical background, Dr. Strohmeier also has more than seventeen years experience as a Manager/Team Leader of scientific research personnel including Ph.D. scientists, B.S.-level technicians, and non-degreed employees. His expertise includes employee recruiting, conducting performance evaluations and mentoring employees for professional growth, developing and enforcing written company policies and procedures, salary administration, and other Human Resource activities. He has presented one-day short courses on “Leadership Principles for R&D Managers and Scientists” at scientific conferences and industrial organizations. He also serves as a volunteer for the American Chemical Society (ACS) as a National Tour Speaker on the topics of: 1) developing and improving leadership skills in scientists and technical managers and 2) characterization of naturally occurring asbestos.
